‘Aura’ named Word of the Year after generating 31.9B impressions and showcasing how social moments reshape culture and language

CHICAGO – December 3, 2025Sprout Social (Nasdaq: SPT), an industry-leading provider of social media management and analytics software, today released its first-ever Social Media Dictionary, a comprehensive analysis of the words, phrases and viral movements that shaped global culture in 2025.

Drawing on a year of cross-platform conversations, Sprout’s analysis shows how hyper-niche trends, AI-driven discovery and community-led content reshaped language and culture. The Dictionary highlights how social intelligence not only reveals what resonated in 2025, but also helps brands anticipate the emerging trends that will keep them competitive in the year ahead.

    The Top Words of 2025

At the top of the list, Aura is Sprout’s 2025 Word of the Year, which generated 31.9 billion impressions across major social networks. From “aura-farming” to “aura-maxxing,” the term’s explosive rise exemplifies how viral micro-moments can rapidly transform into global cultural phenomena.

“Social media didn’t just reflect culture in 2025—it created it,” said Paul Quigley, General Manager of Listening at Sprout Social. “The Social Media Dictionary reveals that massive movements in culture often start from niche communities, like the Aura seeding from sports fans and fashion enthusiasts before going big. Tracking these emerging conversations is invaluable for predicting where social, and culture, is headed and how we can best engage with audiences and create relevant, meaningful content.”

The other top words of 2025 included Labubu, a furry gremlin character created by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung and produced by Chinese toy company Pop Mart. Originally obscure, Labubu went viral thanks to unboxing videos and celebrity influence, amassing over 5.8 million mentions online and reaching peak frenzy between May and July 2025.

The year also saw the rise of absurdist humour and chaotic digital slang. The catchphrase 6–7, originating from Skrilla’s song “Doot Doot,” became a playful inside joke among younger audiences. It was mentioned 3.8 million times in 2025 and represented the nonsensical, “brainrot” humour that dominated online conversations.

    The Year’s Top Marketing Words

The Dictionary also identified the top words used by marketers in 2025. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) emerged as a key term, reflecting the growing importance of optimizing content for AI-driven discovery, with 116 billion impressions.

Substack was another top word, with more than 117 billion impressions across social platforms. This showcases how brands are leaning into owned, niche communities to reach highly engaged audiences through long-form storytelling.

    Looking Ahead to 2026

While the Dictionary looked back, it also looked forward to the words that are set to define the digital conversation in 2026. AI Slop and Clanker are both terms expressing skepticism towards the low-quality and inauthentic content created by AI. With over 2 million mentions combined, this underscores a growing frustration and preference for human-led content in the new year.

Meanwhile, terms like Group 7 are highlighting the growing appeal of niche, exclusive, and personalized online communities, a trend set to expand in 2026.

  • New research finds that social media is the number one source for holiday gift inspiration for Gen Z and Millennials
  • 73% of shoppers plan to contact a brand on social media this holiday season
  • A large majority of consumers are comfortable with companies using AI to deliver better customer care
  • CHICAGO – Nov 4, 2025 — New research from Sprout Social (NASDAQ: SPT), an industry-leading provider of social media management and analytics software, reveals that social media is a leading hub for shopping, customer care, and product discovery around peak retail season. The Q4 2025 Pulse Survey highlights how authentic, human-driven content and customer care outperform automation, offering brands clear strategies to capture revenue as we enter the peak of the gift-giving season.

The survey finds that 80% of shoppers plan to use social media as much, or more, than last year to find holiday gifts. Among Gen Z and Millennials, social media is now the #1 source for holiday gift inspiration; across all consumers it ranks second only to in-store shopping. When asked where they seek product ideas, 45% of respondents cited social media, ahead of friends and family (35%), TV (26%), review sites (22%) and AI chatbots (12%). The data also reveals a shift in trust: user-generated comments (38%) now slightly surpass influencer recommendations (35%) as the most trusted form of social gifting input.

The $1.5 trillion social commerce market has put social media at the center of discovery, purchasing and, unsurprisingly, customer care. The report shows that 73% of shoppers plan to contact a brand via social this holiday season, and the majority expect fast, personalized responses. Sixty-nine percent of consumers, and 78% of Gen Z and Millennials, are comfortable with companies using AI to deliver faster and more personalized social customer care, making the strategic use of AI chatbots critical for scaling care efforts and maintaining a competitive edge during the holiday rush.

“We know social media has become the hub for commerce, but seeing it emerge as the number one source of holiday gift inspiration among younger consumers truly underscores its influence,” said Scott Morris, Chief Marketing Officer at Sprout Social. “To reach these audiences, brands need to be present across diverse social platforms—delivering relatable content, authentic engagement and responsive care. AI can help scale care and creativity, positioning brands to show up more meaningfully in more places. The holidays are the perfect moment to refine strategies, reach new audiences and build momentum for the year ahead.”

Looking to 2026, the Q4 2025 Pulse Survey signals a crucial pivot for brands where authenticity is no longer a point of differentiation, but a prerequisite. Human-generated content is the number-one priority for users next year; almost 90% of consumers feel brands do a decent job of listening on social, yet 55% believe brands don’t do enough to act on those insights. Data privacy and ad control top the list of platform issues for users heading into 2026, and Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok remain the networks users plan to engage with more or for the first time. Brands that align on authenticity, responsiveness and platform strategy stand to lead the next wave of social commerce.

  • The new integration allows brands to send finished designs directly to Sprout publishing without ever leaving Canva, accelerating workflows and reducing errors between creative and social teams.
  • Sprout Social is the most comprehensive social media management platform to offer this integration, empowering brands to scale their presence with compelling visual content that captures attention and cuts through today’s crowded social landscape.
  • CHICAGO, September 15 , 2025 Sprout Social (Nasdaq: SPT), an industry-leading social media management software, launched a new integration with Canva, the leading all-in-one visual communication platform. As the most comprehensive social media management platform to offer this integration, Sprout enables brands to strengthen their social presence with more engaging content by streamlining the path from design to publishing. Users can now send finalized visuals from Canva directly into Sprout as draft posts, accelerating workflows and reducing errors between creative and social teams.

Social media moves fast, and visuals are at the heart of how brands connect with customers. With short-form video delivering the highest ROI and commanding the most marketing investment in 2025, teams need to create and publish engaging content quickly. The new Sprout Social and Canva integration makes that possible with a one-click workflow that sends designs, images or videos from Canva directly into Sprout, complete with captions, tags, profile groups, and scheduled times. This eliminates handoffs and delays so teams can stay focused on strategy and performance.

“In an era where every brand is competing for attention on social, the ability to seamlessly move from creative concept to published content is a decisive advantage,” said Scott Morris, CMO of Sprout Social. “Our industry-first integration with Canva makes it faster and easier for brands to share visually striking content that captures attention, builds deeper audience connections, and drives meaningful business results. By streamlining the path from design to publishing, we’re helping marketers unlock the full potential of social-first strategies, coupling creativity with social intelligence for a powerful competitive edge.”

“Millions of social media managers and creators already rely on Canva to scale their content creation,” said Anwar Haneef, GM and Head of Ecosystem at Canva. “By connecting Canva directly with Sprout Social, we’re bridging two of the most powerful social media tools to create an even faster path from idea to impact. This means that engaging, on-brand social assets can flow seamlessly into publishing, helping creators and brands stay consistent and move at the speed of culture.”

The integration removes common handoff challenges by giving creative teams a direct path to share assets with social managers for review and scheduling. This makes it especially valuable for teams whose designers finalize content in Canva and need a seamless way to hand it off for approval and publishing.

“With the new Canva integration in Sprout Social, our team at FedEx can move faster while keeping every piece of content on-brand,” said Matthew Wallace, Manager of Global Social Media at FedEx. “Eliminating the extra steps of downloading and uploading saves us valuable time, and having everything flow directly from Canva into Sprout’s Publishing Calendar makes it simple to stay consistent across all of our channels. This integration is a huge win for efficiency.”

    • Despite ramping up investment in social, only 44% of marketing leaders consider their teams “expert” at measuring social’s business impact

CHICAGO, August 20, 2025 — New research from Sprout Social (NASDAQ: SPT), an industry-leading provider of cloud-based social media management software, reveals that marketing leaders are significantly shifting their budget priorities this year, reallocating funds from traditional channels to social media. The 2025 Impact of Social Media Report, which surveyed 1,200 marketing leaders worldwide, finds that leaders believe social media drives key outcomes like revenue, customer acquisition, and customer loyalty. As budgets shift and social’s strategic importance grows, the report outlines how a focus on business-driven metrics and cross-functional data integration will be critical to securing executive trust and investment in the era of social intelligence.

Social media is now seen as a primary driver of business value, shaping every stage of the customer journey. Marketing leaders credit it with delivering key outcomes such as customer acquisition (60%), customer loyalty (58%), and revenue (56%). As a result, 80% of marketing leaders globally plan to reallocate funds from other channels to social media. In addition, 87% plan to increase their paid social spend, and over 80% will increase their spend in influencer marketing and organic social. The investment extends to talent, with three-quarters of leaders planning to expand the headcount of their social teams in the next year.

This increased investment is increasing the demands from leadership, too, particularly the need to effectively measure and prove social’s ROI. However, a significant gap exists in their confidence in social media overall and their team’s ability to tie social to broader business outcomes. Less than half (44%) of leaders rate their social team at the “expert” level in measuring business impact, which is often blamed on a lack of sophisticated reporting. The research indicates that most social teams measure success by engagement (68%) and conversion rates (65%), while leaders say that “expert” teams are more likely to use revenue and efficiency metrics to measure ROI.

“Social media is rapidly capturing a larger share of marketing budgets, driven by its unmatched ability to deliver results that other channels struggle to achieve,” said Scott Morris, CMO of Sprout Social. “With the rise of social search, increasing influence of creator-driven marketing, and effectiveness of advanced algorithms, social platforms empower brands to connect with audiences on a personal level while gaining real-time insights into customer behavior and campaign performance. As social media delivers stronger ROI and attracts greater investment, enhancing data literacy will be critical so brands can harness social insights for transformative impact across their organization.”

The report also reveals how CMOs are pivoting hiring priorities to match evolving consumer behaviors, particularly Gen Z’s preference for social media as the first stop for search. Marketing leaders are quickly seizing this opportunity, with 81% reallocating funds from traditional SEO to social tactics. More than half of brands already have a social media search engine optimization (SOSEO) strategy in place, with another 43% actively experimenting. Reflecting this shift, SOSEO specialists are now the #1 position marketing leaders are hiring for, underscoring the rapid impact of social search on business strategy.

Additional findings from the 2025 Impact of Social Media Report include:

    • Platform Impact: The top social media platforms for business impact are Facebook (70%), YouTube (68%), and TikTok (64%). However, the most effective platform varies by audience: B2B brands find LinkedIn (70%) most impactful, while B2C brands prefer Facebook (67%).
    • Data and Strategy: The majority (72%) of leaders whose teams are experts at measuring social media’s impact say their teams are also experts at understanding how to drive more business impact, underscoring the more data teams have, the more strategic they become.
    • Quality vs. Quantity: A disconnect exists between leaders and social media managers regarding content volume. While 69% of CMOs think more posts will increase impact, only 50% of managers agree. Data from Sprout’s 2025 Content Benchmarks Report supports the managers’ view, showing that engagement rose nearly 20% even as publishing volume dropped over the past year.
    • Cross-Functional Insights: Marketing leaders want social media insights to be used across multiple departments, including digital marketing (71%), customer experience (58%), customer care (49%), and business development (49%). Yet, less than half of teams integrate social data into their customer relationship management (CRM) software.

“Even just two years ago, most brands focused on vanity metrics in isolation. Today, Canva social reporting is much more sophisticated and complex. We are integrating social data into the larger marketing mix by analyzing community conversations on social to learn more about what our audience needs from our product,” said Shirley Tat, Global Head of Social, Canva. “By tracking all of these conversations, we’re able to tag thousands of incoming messages, and eventually close the loop with our community and show them we listened. We launched all of our new products this year based on user feedback. We’ve come a long way in thinking about how social media shifts the business forward.”

      • Unify social with your current tools: Route social messages into the same agent workspace used for email, chat and voice, with no new platforms or additional training required.
      • Create a 360-degree view of your customer: Unify social data with your customer data to give every team a holistic view of interactions across channels
      • Fuel strategy beyond support: Help marketing, sales and product teams leverage real customer conversations and social insights to inform messaging, improve journeys and drive results
